Cardinal boys excel again

=         Another season of GHV boys’ basketball has come to an end and the Cardinal squad has many reasons to take pride in their accomplishments. When the season began, the Cards had their minds set on repeating as TIC West champions. After a sputtering start, GHV got into a groove and worked their way into the top spot with a league record of 14 – 2. The Cardinals had to share their crown with rival Forest City, but no doubt felt much better about the situation after blowing out the Indians in their Class 2A District Final matchup. With a repeat trip to the Class 2A state tournament at stake the Cardinals were unable to advance to Wells Fargo arena, falling to Aplington-Parkersburg in a five-point decision.

The Cardinal roster featured eight seniors with seven of those filling spots in Coach Joe Albertson’s regular rotation. Ryan Meyers and Nick Joynt were two of GHV’s senior leaders. Meyers was GHV’s leading scorer on the season averaging just over 16 ppg. Ryan was also tough on the boards, grabbing 176 on the year while recording 58 assists and 47 steals. Joynt also averaged double figures for the season (13.4 ppg) with 132 rebounds and 50 assists.
