Cardinal girls blow out Webster City

After a heartbreaking overtime loss in their first action of the season, the GHV girls’ soccer team rebounded in a big way with an impressive 9 – 1 victory over Webster City on Tuesday. The Cardinals then dropped their second overtime decision of the season to an area powerhouse on Thursday as Mason City escaped the Cardinals 4 – 3.

There was plenty of offense on display in Tuesday’s win over the Lynx. Hannah Lau scored three goals while picking up three assists to lead GHV to the win. Mackenzie Van Gerpen added a pair of goals and Jacki Van Oort scored twice with an assist. Alison Johnson and Payton Echelberger completed the Cardinal scoring with a goal apiece. Defensively, Morgan Westendorf was credited with five saves in the match.

Cardinal coach Josh Banse commented, “I thought we needed a game like this. We needed confidence in our tracking abilities and I think that we have that now. We played well as a team. Our control was great and communication was great as well. Hannah is playing really well early on in this season. This was Van Gerpen’s first game in over two years and she also played phenomenal! All of our players are starting to click together. Our defense of Bretta Carolus, Carlie Knutson and Brooklyn Laird are doing a fantastic job as well”
