One of Iowa’s longest serving school board members, Garner-Hayfield-Ventura School Board President Larry Costello of Ventura, was recognized for his 41 years of service.

Costello was presented an Award of Merit by Lisa Bartusek, Executive Director of the Iowa Association of School Boards (IASB), May 8, prior to the Garner-Hayfield-Ventura Board of Education meeting.

Members of the Costello family were also present.

“The IASB, State of Iowa, and those seated around this table say ‘thank you’,” Bartusek stated.

Costello was first elected to the Ventura Board of Education in 1976. Since then he has seen continuous school board service, including the merger of the Ventura and Garner-Hayfield districts in 2015.

When first elected to the Ventura school board, Costello served with three experienced board members (Gordon Quintus, Delbert Watson, and Mary Ann Flatten), Superintendent” Gary Schichtl. Dyle Martin was the high school principal.

“I quickly learned to look at how our actions would affect the students,” he recalled. “The principal … offered negatives to actions but really led the board to make decisions that would benefit the students the most - not necessarily what the students wanted.”
