Eagles send nine to state track

West Hancock's 4x800 team.

Shuttle hurdle team

NORTHWOOD – West Hancock's girls sprinters and a variety of boys events will try to make some noise at the Class 1A state track & field meet this week in Des Moines.

Kaylee Hudspeth won the 200 and will compete in the maximum four events as she will anchor three relays for the Eagles.

Among the state-qualifying relays for coach Mark Sanger's team are the 4x200, 4x400 and sprint medley relays.

Joe Smith qualified in both the 110 hurdles and the long jump. Joining him in the long jump was the district runner-up, MaCoy Yeakel, who leapt 21 feet even.

The Eagles shuttle hurdle relay finished third, but an unheard-of five teams out of the Northwood district qualified for state in that event. Running on that relay are Yeakel, Gavin Becker, Hunter Hagen and Joe Smith.

A runner-up finish also gained an at-large berth for the boys 4x800 relay, anchored by Nick Lemmon.
