Experience returns for Cardinal softball

l   Historically the Cardinal softball program has been able to consistently field solid teams but assembling successful squads has become increasingly challenging in recent years. Second year coach Matt Graham is hoping that a solid list of experienced players will help get the program back on the right track this season.

GHV faced some talented competition in TIC play last season, leading to a league record of 3 – 13 while placing eighth out of nine teams. Overall, the Cards went 5 – 25 but Graham is optimistic that the lessons learned in 2016 will lead to more victories this year.

The Cardinals lost two seniors to graduation from last year’s starting lineup, meaning seven of the nine positions will have seasoned players in those spots. Senior third-baseman Mackenzie Van Gerpen is the Cardinals’ top prospect from a year ago. Van Gerpen was a second-team all-conference performer in 2016 that finished the season with a .414 batting average.
