Garner councilman resigns

GARNER – Citing family and work commitments, the Garner City Council accepted the resignation of Councilman George Smith, Sept. 25

Smith was re-elected to the position in 2017. Smith previously served one term in 2002-2006. He was elected again in 2009 and re-elected in 2013 and 2017.

In a comment to the Leader, Smith said he is studying for his certified employee specialist designation.

“It was something that came up at work after I put my name on the ballot,” he remarked. He also cited family commitments.

Smith said that overall, serving on the Garner City Council has been a good experience.

“This is my 13th year,” he said. “It’s been very rewarding. Some of the highpoints have been representing the community and to able to give back to the community that’s I’ve lived in most of my life. I’ve never had an agenda…just work with my colleagues to try and do what’s best for the City of Garner.”

Mayor Ken Mick and the council thanked Smith for his service to the City of Garner.
