It would be an understatement to say that Cardinal track coach Dyan Childress was pleased with her squad’s performance at last week’s Class 2A State Qualifying Meet. In fact according to Childress they are, “beyond excited to be sending five events down to State.” The Cardinals took full advantage of running in front of their home crowd on Thursday, advancing four individual events and one relay to this week’s State Track and Field Meet.

Sophomore sprinter Jayden Hughes sealed two automatic spots at the state meet with second place finishes in the 100 and 200-meter dashes. GHV junior Emma Whelan also earned a guaranteed spot at this week’s championships with her second place finish in the high jump. GHV’s two additional qualifiers had to wait to learn their fate as they were hoping for at-large spots decided by comparing efforts from all eight state qualifying sites.
