The Garner-Hayfield-Ventura softball team neared the end of its season with a doubleheader at rival West Hancock on July 2 followed by a trip to Eagle Grove on Wednesday.

The team would keep the scores close, but they couldn’t find a win as they fell twice to West Hancock 3-6 and 11-14 and lost 10-11 against Eagle Grove.

The Cardinals started out well in both West Hancock games, one being a rescheduled game from a rain delay.

In game one, the girls put in two runs to take the early lead.

However, scoring would be scarce for the Cardinal and Black after that.

As West Hancock scored four runs in inning three and two more after, the Cardinals struggled to find a way to home plate.

They’d finally score once more in the sixth inning.

Nicole Upmeyer and Emily Van Dusseldorp led the team with two hits.

Upmeyer helped to drive-in a run.

Maddie Graham helped to keep the game in check for the Cards as she struck out seven batters, despite giving up seven hits.

Of the five runs that were scored on her, none of them were earned.

The teams went at each other in the second round, scoring seven runs each before the third inning was through.
