Hancock supervisors adopt FY19 budget

GARNER – The hearing for fiscal year 2018-19 Hancock County budget was brief and without objection or public comment. The annual budget hearing and weekly meeting of the Board of Supervisors was held Tuesday, Feb. 20. The $15 million budget goes into effect July 1.

Total property tax askings for FY19 are $5,793,178. The urban and rural tax rates dropped slightly from  $3.89752 (urban) and $7.06877 (rural) for FY18 to $3.88342 (urban) and $7.05454 (rural) for FY19

The budget also includes the 3.5 percent salary increase for elected county officers, as recommended by the Hancock Compensation Board in January.

The 2018-19 salaries are as follows: supervisors ($34,812), auditor ($62,685), treasurer ($62,598), recorder ($62,080), sheriff ($83,955), and attorney ($101,561).

Supervisors approved a list of courthouse improvement projects to take place during the next 2-5 years, totaling $175,000. The projects with committed funding include:

•$85,000 for tuck pointing the courthouse building

•$25,000 for maintenance and updating the courthouse

•$15,000 to improve courthouse security

•$50,000 to demolish and replace the current annex building

Hancock County Sheriff Scott Dodd offered to research possible grant funding to assist with the cost of demolition of the annex.
