ISBA honors Garner attorney with Award of Merit

Phil Garland, an attorney from Garner, was awarded The Iowa State Bar Association’s highest honor in 2019 - the Award of Merit.  Created in 1947, the Award of Merit recognizes an individual’s selfless dedication to the legal profession, the bar association and the community.

Garland was granted the award during the ISBA’s Annual Awards Gala on Wednesday, June 12, at the Iowa Events Center in Des Moines.

An announcement that Garland was to receive the award was made during a dinner for the Iowa Supreme Court at Forest City, on April 2.

“I was very surprised, humbled and flattered,” Garland said in a later comment.

Phil Garland was admitted to the Iowa Bar in 1973 after graduating from the Creighton University School of Law. He began his career with a firm in Omaha, before deciding to open a solo practice in Garner.Today, the solo firm he started is a two-person firm. Carrie Rodriguez, a 2015 graduate of the University of Iowa College of Law, joined the firm now known as Garland and Rodriguez.

Garland served on the ISBA Board of Governors from 2004 to 2009. He chaired the Scope and Correlations Committee from 2007 to 2011. He served as president of the Iowa State Bar Foundation Fellows in 2015-2016 and currently sits on the Foundation’s board of directors.
