More discussion on East 2nd St. sidewalk construction

GARNER – The East 2nd Street Sidewalk was again the main topic of discussion by the Garner City Council on May 9.

Since 2008, the City of Garner has had an on-going sidewalk repair/improvement program. For 2017 the sidewalk program includes Wildridge Estates Subdivision.

In April, City Administrator Randy Lansing proposed that property owners sign a voluntary payment agreement to pay for a share of the new sidewalk construction along East 2nd, in lieu of installing new sidewalk along the cul-de-sacs.

The council toured the area prior to the May 9 meeting. The city also has plans for water intake replacement and culvert improvements along East 2nd.

“When we [first] had this discussion, we decided to put in on the north side and go ahead with the engineering,” Councilman Dennis Drabek stated.

“Initially when we were doing this we were told that [constructing sidewalk on the south side of the road] wasn’t an option and that was the reason we went with the north side,” said Councilman George Smith. “Then we found out that maybe it was was an option. Where does that stand today?”
