Three Cards advance to boys’ State track

Reece Smith, Ray Cataldo and Logan Dalbeck are GHV state track qualifiers.

It’s been no secret that GHV’s distance events have been providing plenty of excitement for the GHV boys’ track team this season. That excitement continued last week as the Cardinals’ top-three distance runners all qualified for this week’s State Track and Field Meet.

Reece Smith won two individual events to earn a trip to the Drake Stadium. Smith’s winning time of 10:02.40 is the seventh-ranked qualifying time for the championship race this week. Reece also won the 1600-meter race with a time of 4:28.85 which ranks as the best qualifying time among all state competitors.

Ray Cataldo also qualified for the state meet in two events. Cataldo placed second behind Smith in the 3200-meter run with a time of 10:21.65. Ray also qualified in the 800-meter run with a third place finish in a time of 2:03.89.

GHV’s final state qualifier is senior Logan Dalbeck. Logan finished second in the 1600-meter run with a time of 4:38.19. Dalbeck and Smith are both returning qualifiers to the state meet while this is Cataldo’s first experience running on Drake’s blue track.
