On Tuesday, July 25 Hancock County will have and estimated 20,000 visitors when the Registers Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI XLV) rolls through.

Hancock County is on Day 3 of the ride, which starts at Algona and ends at Clear Lake. The route includes the pass-through communities of Wesley, Britt, Garner and Ventura. Tuesday is also “People for Bikes” Day.

Committees are being organized to make the ride go as safely and smoothly as possible. To do that, volunteers are key, organizers say.

An organizational meeting was held May 1 at the Garner Public Library.

The Garner Chamber of Commerce is spearheading RAGBRAI organizational efforts here.

“We’re excited for this opportunity to showcase our community,” said Deb Schmidt, co-chair “We’d like to hear your ideas for a theme to welcome the thousands of visitors to our town.”

Submit or email your ideas to the Garner Chamber of Commerce by June 1.

Garner is also the “meeting town” for support vehicles to meet up with riders during the route prior to reaching Clear Lake.

The Garner RAGBRAI steering committee will meet with RAGBRAI director T.J. Juskiewicz on June 6.

“By then we hope to have all of our ducks in a row,” said Schmidt.
