Church History

The early history of Zion Church began as many of the early settlers of Hancock County during the mid to late 1800’s were Germans from New Knoxville, Ohio or from their native land. In those early church years meetings were held in various homes. Many of the immigrants had received their early spiritual training in the Reformed church and desired to organize a church of their own.

During those years of organization, a student pastor was called from Mission House Seminary in Sheboygan, Wisconsin and the first service was held in a rural schoolhouse. The new church and parsonage were built at the Peace Reformed site south of Garner.

In a few years it was decided to start a church in Garner to minister to the needs of the people of the Reformed faith. On January 20, 1889 the group was officially organized as the German Reformed Church with 12 charter members. The original church was built on the corner of Sixth Street and Bush Avenue and served the congregation for 36 years, through times of struggle and hardship and trusting in God’s faithfulness.

The Garner German Reformed Church continued to be served jointly by pastors from Peace Reformed Church for sixty-two years. The pastors who served during those years were; Rev. Treick, Rev. R Kirchhefer, Rev. Calvin Schmidt, Rev. William Hueneman, and Rev. Robert Stubbe.
